Italy --- World Champions Finally!!! 12 years!!!!!!!
Finally.. after 12 years of agony for all the fans of the Azzuri!!!!!
It's really an indescribable feeling right now for me.. after 12 years of long wait!!
I've supported Italy since the 1994 World Cup.. due to, yes, you guessed it right, the Divine Ponytail.. a certain player named Roberto Baggio.
Since that penalty shoot-out loss to Brazil in the final, it has been a hell of a roller-coaster ride supporting the Azzuri.
I can't remember what happened at Euro 2000. We were having the wake for my great-grandmother then.
World Cup 1998: Agony for Italy as Zidane comes back after a two-game suspension (red card again!) to inspire the Leus Blues to a penalty shoot-out win over the Azzuri. When Luigi Di Biagio hit the last penalty against the cross-bar, my heart sank.. Italy went out!
Euro 2000: Heartbroken when France equalised in injury time through Sylvain Wiltord, and then Juventus forward David Trezeguet scoring the Golden Goal to nail the coffin for the Italians. (It was said that Italy defended and played poorly to the final, and ironically when they played their best game in the final, they lost.)
World Cup 2002: Again, near-last-minute heroics by Korea wipes out the Italian lead and Ahn Jung Hwan would go on and score the Golden Goal for the hosts to knock the Italians out. To go out to such unfancied opponents was a true blow.
Euro 2004: As I was on quite a hectic course (National Service - ISPC) during this period, I did not follow the tournament.. once the Italians are out, I don't care who won it.. Even a team like Greece can win it, for all I care.
Now back to the present. I still can't believe the Italians won it!!!!!!
It seemed over when France got the penalty right at the start of the game.
It was a blatant dive to me, as simple as that.. Materazzi clearly retracted his leg and did not make any contact with Malouda at all.
Can't believe the referee got fooled so early in the game!
As I've witnessed how France held their own even against the most potent attacking force in the world - Brazil, I panicked.
The Italians aren't exactly renowned for their attacking expertise, are they?
And you can't imagine the GREAT relief I feel when Materazzi powered that header from an Andrea Pirlo corner.. it was another great header from him following the one vs the Czech Republic.
they were relieved, so was I.
Then the match sank into boredom again, as the Italians were contented with sitting in deep and absorbing all the pressure mounted on them by France.
The only highlight was when Zizou got caught in a moment of madness, and got sent off. What a terrible way to end a glittering career of his.
When penalties were called upon, I had no doubts that the Italians would win it.
No Henry, no Zidane, no Viera, no Ribery, how to take penalty sia!
And they did!!
My cult hero now.. Fabio Grosso.
This relatively unknown left back from Palermo is quite the star of the tournament for the Azzuri as he was involved in all the key moments of the progess of the Italian team. That deliberate fall over Blackburn Rovers player Lucas Neill to earn that last-minute penalty against the Aussies, the brillant last-gasp curler that broke the German defence and hearts, and finally, the final kick of the tournament that sent all the Italian fans around the world delighted.
He's my cult hero now!
Also kudos to coach Marcello Lippi. The twice-former Juventus coach has built a close unit of team players that plays like a team, instead of the individualistic Italian teams of the past. He has built that siege mentality into his players, who are facing the match-fixing scandal back home, and the underestimation of the press. It did them a world of good.
One could feel the solidarity among the squad, as they celebrated every goal with great passion and unity, and every player seemed willing to play their part, regardless big or small. There were no star players, but yet every player was a star.. that was how united and good the squad was.
All credit to Lippi!!
And seeing Del Piero, one of my favourite players, being so happy and lifting that trophy, it brought immense pride and joy to me.
Italy will take flake for winning this encounter negatively, by holding on in defence instead of trying to attack. They have been hailed to play good, attacking football in the previous rounds, only to revert back to the Catenaccio system they know best in the Final.
But hey, compared to Euro 2000 when they played negatively all the way, then good, attacking football in the Final but lost, I know what I'll rather choose!
Victory is sweet. The $$$ is even sweeter!!!
That's what I call putting money where the heart is.
